5 Major Characteristics Of A System

 

In this article, I want to talk about five major characteristics of a system. Before I delve into that discussion, I want to define what a system is.

 

A system can be seen as a collection of various components that can together produce results not obtainable by individual components alone.

 

Characteristics of a system

#1 Dynamism

One of the major features of a system is that each system is dynamic. When we talk of this Dynamism, it has to do with the subsystem being able to work independently of one another. It also means that they have to come together to become a system.

 

#2 Optimization

It should be noted that the system can also be optimized for efficiency. This means that if a system is performing effectively, it is always possible to look at areas of improvement so that the system can produce more. That means all systems always have continual improvement built into it.

 

3 Individual optimization

Apart from the combination of the whole system, we need to know that a system also consists of subsystems that can be optimized.

 

You should know that the non-performance of a particular component of a system can negatively affect the entire system. That is why sub-components at times can be worked upon in order to get more results.

 

#4: Systems and components cannot be optimized at the same time

Earlier I have said that the system can be optimized and a subsystem can also be optimized but it is also difficult to optimize both system and subsystem at the same time. You will need to do it one after the other.

 

#5 Systems are not linear

There is a need for us to understand that systems are non-linear in terms of responsiveness. This means that a change in the input does not produce a predictable change in the output.

 

Most at times, you cannot predict what the result of a change in the component will be.

 

You need to understand that many changes may occur within the system and between the system and its environment. When these changes take place, adaptive behaviour occurs within the components that in turn add to the system ‘ s Dynamics.

 

The system Dynamics are identified by the interaction between the components based on the relationships and dependencies that exist between the components.

 

Systems are typically the responsibility of an organisation’s management. The management needs to examine the Optimization trade-offs between the components and the systems in order to take appropriate action to achieve the best outcomes for the organisation.

 

You need to also note that the result of the examination will impact the project under consideration. Therefore it is important that the Project Manager take these results into consideration when determining how to fulfil project objectives.

 

In addition, the Project Manager should take into consideration the organisation’s governance framework.
