7 Skills Project Managers Must Develop for Stakeholders Communication

 

There are critical points of communication between the Project Manager and other Project Stakeholders. As it is being said, an average stakeholder use about ninety percent of his time communicating with stakeholders. In this article, I want to talk about seven major areas that Project Managers have to focus on when he needs to keep stakeholders abreast of the project progress.

 

Here are some of the skills that a Project Manager needs to develop for stakeholders communication.

 

#1 Fine-tuned skills

The Project Manager must develop finely tuned skills that can adjust to any style of communication with stakeholders. He must be able to communicate using different skills.

He must be able to carry out verbal written and non-verbal communication effectively.

 

He should be able to read the body language of any stakeholder as well.

 

#2 Communication plan

The Project Manager as part of stakeholders communication skills must be able to create and stick to different communication plans for the project.

 

Stakeholders preferred mode of communication will always change from time to time. The Project Manager must be able to maintain a constant phase accordingly.

 

#3 Communicating predictably

Another major critical skill for stakeholders communication for project stakeholders that the project manager need is that he must be able to communicate predictably and consistently.

 

He must have a schedule so that the project stakeholders are always looking forward to what he has to communicate with them.

 

He has to maintain a specific mode of communication as agreed with stakeholders.

 

#4 Understanding stakeholder needs

The Project Manager also needs to understand the communication needs of his stakeholders. He needs to ensure that they are always updated about project progress.

 

It is also possible that it is only project communication that some project stakeholders will receive as deliverables for the project.

 

#5 Concise communication

There is a need for the Project Manager to make communication with Project stakeholders concise, clear, simple, relevant and tailored

 

He has to ensure that all project communications are targeted towards particular stakeholders in a manner that they will be able to understand.

#6 Positive and negative news

The Project Manager must also communicate with stakeholders in such a way that they have access to both positive and negative views.

 

He has to let stakeholders have access to viral information. This will allow them to make meaningful contributions to the success of the project.

 

#7 Incorporating feedback channels

The Project Manager also needs to incorporate feedback channels so that he can tailor his activities based on the feedback he is getting from stakeholders. This will also form a knowledge base that will be used when making future decisions on the project.
